WAYWARD SEAL RESCUED FROM NEW HAVEN STREETS
A young seal made an unexpected visit to the city before being rescued.

New Haven police received an unusual call—there was a seal wandering the streets. Officers arrived to find a gray seal pup near Chapel Street, leading to a quick response from DEEP and Mystic Aquarium’s animal rescue team.
This wasn’t the first time the little seal was spotted. He had been relocated to a safe beach just days before but somehow found his way back to the city. Rescuers say the underweight pup, likely trying to avoid threats from other seals, will now receive care until he’s strong enough for release.
Mystic Aquarium’s team hopes to return him to the wild once he can hunt and survive on his own.

FASCINATING CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Willimantic’s Frog Fight
Willimantic has long embraced its quirky local legend known as the Windham Frog Fight of 1754.
This peculiar tale, set in an era when Connecticut residents lived in fear of frontier conflict and the supernatural, recounts how a night’s mysterious cacophony sent the townspeople into a frenzy.
Hearing what they believed to be war cries or perhaps the end-of-days trumpets, some residents reported their own names being called aloud.
The following morning, the source of the racket revealed itself: hundreds of frogs had converged on a shrinking pond in a desperate quest for water during a severe drought. Their jostling and croaking had caused the unearthly din, and the aftermath—a battlefield of bullfrog bodies—gave rise to the enduring story of the “Frog Fight.”
This colorful legend has inspired centuries of storytelling and local pride, culminating in the creation of the whimsical Frog Bridge.
Officially named the Thread City Crossing, this bridge spans the Willimantic River and opened in 2000, replacing an older stone structure from 1857. In addition to its distinctive 11-foot bronze frogs, the bridge features giant spools of thread as a nod to Willimantic’s rich textile manufacturing history.
Today, these playful sculptures and the vibrant tale they represent make the Frog Bridge a beloved local landmark, embodying the community’s unique blend of history, humor, and resilience.
