THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Clare Boothe Luce: Connecticut’s Trailblazing First Congresswoman
A writer, playwright, war correspondent, and diplomat who helped shape American politics. Clare Boothe Luce was one of the most accomplished and influential women of the 20th century. Born in 1903, she built an impressive career across multiple fields before entering politics. Early in life she pursued acting and writing, eventually becoming a prominent editor at Vogue and Vanity Fair. She later found success as a playwright, producing several Broadway shows and film adaptations that earned national attention.
After marrying publishing magnate Henry Luce and settling in Greenwich, she expanded her career even further. During World War II she traveled overseas as a war correspondent for major publications such as Time and Life, reporting from the front lines of global conflict. Soon afterward, she turned her focus toward public service and ran for Congress as a Republican representing Fairfield County.
Her victory in 1942 made her the first woman elected to represent Connecticut in the U.S. House of Representatives. While serving two terms, Luce became known for her strong views on foreign policy and national defense, helping support the creation of the Atomic Energy Commission and advocating for American troops stationed abroad.
After leaving Congress, Luce continued to play an important role on the world stage. She served as the U.S. Ambassador to Italy under President Dwight Eisenhower and later advised multiple presidents on intelligence matters. Over the course of her life she received numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and her legacy continues today through scholarships that support women pursuing careers in science and technology.

Irish Music and Dance Fill Connecticut’s St. Patrick’s Season
St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are stretching well beyond a single day across Connecticut, with Irish concerts, dance shows, and cultural performances happening throughout the month. From touring acts like Celtic Woman and The Irish Tenors to lively bagpipe rock from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, venues across the state are hosting a wide range of events. Parades, family performances, and comedy shows are also part of the festivities as communities celebrate Irish heritage all month long.
Cybersecurity Concerns Rise After Municipal Network Disruptions
Recent cyber incidents affecting municipal systems in Meriden and New Britain have highlighted growing cybersecurity risks for local governments. Officials say ransomware attacks and other digital threats are becoming more common, sometimes costing millions of dollars to resolve. Experts are urging cities and towns to strengthen security measures, invest in system upgrades, and train employees to better protect sensitive data and critical services.
Cookbook Clubs Bring Connecticut Home Cooks Together
Libraries around Connecticut are turning traditional book clubs into hands-on culinary gatherings through cookbook clubs. Participants select recipes from a featured cookbook, prepare dishes at home, and bring them to share during monthly meetings. The events blend food, conversation, and community, with members swapping cooking tips, experimenting with new recipes, and enjoying a potluck-style meal together.
Popular Family Restaurant Relocates from Trumbull to Stratford
Marianna’s Pantry, a beloved family-run breakfast and lunch spot in Trumbull, has closed its original location and is preparing to reopen in Stratford. Owners Melissa Cotto and Marina DeCarli say the move will allow the restaurant to continue growing while introducing a few new additions to the menu and experience. The new Stratford location is expected to open by May, and the owners say they are still exploring the possibility of opening another location in Trumbull in the future.
