ON THIS DAY IN CT HISTORY: A FALLEN POLITICAL STAR

March 18 turned out to be an unlucky day for former Connecticut Governor John G. Rowland—not once, but twice. On this day in 2005, he was sentenced to a year in federal prison for corruption charges. Exactly ten years later, on March 18, 2015, he was convicted again—this time for violating campaign election laws.

Once a rising political star, Rowland was elected to state office at just 23 years old and later became the state’s youngest governor in over a century. His career, however, unraveled when a federal investigation uncovered that he had accepted bribes in the form of cash and services from state contractors. Facing impeachment, he resigned in 2004 and pleaded guilty to corruption charges.

After serving his sentence, Rowland attempted to rebuild his reputation, working as a radio host and political consultant. But his involvement in a secret campaign finance scheme led to another conviction in 2015, landing him back in federal prison—this time for 30 months. A dramatic fall from grace, marked twice on the same day in Connecticut history.
