$20 MILLION EXPERIMENT COMES AT A COST TO CONNECTICUT RATEPAYERS

Out-of-state startups testing grid tech, funded through your electric bill

Connecticut electric customers are footing a $20 million bill for out-of-state and international startups to test new electric grid technologies—part of the Innovative Energy Solutions program overseen by PURA.

The program, funded through customer electric rates, was designed to encourage grid innovation while supposedly protecting ratepayers with a lower budget cap.

According to filings, both United Illuminating and Eversource plan to spend about $10 million each for phases 1 and 2. Some critics question why Connecticut residents are paying to support companies not based in the state.
