NEW HAVEN FOUNDED AS A “NEW JERUSALEM” IN 1638
In April of 1638, Puritan minister John Davenport and 500 settlers arrived on the shores of Long Island Sound to found a religious utopia. They named their settlement New Haven, envisioning it as a “heavenly city” governed by godly principles and structured with a formal nine-square grid.
