THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

America’s First Female Patent Holder

In the early 1800s, it was rare for women to receive formal recognition for their ideas, even though the law technically allowed it. Social and legal barriers made it difficult for women, especially married ones, to claim ownership of inventions. That’s what makes Mary Kies of Killingly stand out. She became the first woman in the United States to receive a patent under her own name for a method of weaving straw with silk or thread, improving the way hats were made.

Her invention came at a time when home-based manufacturing played a big role in supporting families, and her technique helped make production more efficient and affordable. While details about her work are limited due to records being lost in a later fire, her contribution still stood out enough to earn recognition from First Lady Dolley Madison, who personally acknowledged the impact of her innovation.

Despite breaking new ground, Kies never saw major financial success from her patent. Changes in fashion quickly reduced demand for her design, and she spent her later years in modest circumstances. Still, her achievement remains a milestone—marking the moment a woman officially stepped into the world of American invention and set the stage for generations to follow.
