Sesame Street favorites are bringing nonstop family fun to Waterbury

Now more than 60 years strong, the festival celebrates young talent and gives students the chance to perform on one of Connecticut’s most iconic stages inside Mortensen Hall. This community event supports local first responders and charitable programs
The BAPS Charities Walk/Run returns to Elms Ridge Park in Rocky Hill on May 31 beginning at 2:00 PM, combining fitness, community, and giving back all in one event. THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
The Mystic Fort Attack and the Pequot War
One of the most devastating events in early Connecticut history took place during the Pequot War in 1637, when English colonial forces and their Native allies launched an attack on a fortified Pequot village near present-day Mystic. The conflict followed rising tensions between English settlers and the Pequots, including earlier attacks that heightened fears throughout the young Connecticut colonies.
Led by Captain John Mason, English soldiers joined forces with hundreds of Mohegan and Narragansett allies in a predawn assault intended to surprise the village. What began as a military attack quickly escalated into widespread destruction when the village was set on fire, trapping many inside while armed forces surrounded the area. Hundreds of Pequots, including non-combatants, lost their lives during the attack.
The event became one of the defining moments of the Pequot War and remains one of the most controversial and tragic chapters in Connecticut’s colonial history. Historians continue to examine its long-term impact on Native communities, colonial expansion, and relations between English settlers and Indigenous nations throughout New England.
