THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Helen Keller Receives Presidential Praise for a Lifetime of Advocacy

In June of 1961, one of Connecticut’s most remarkable residents received a powerful tribute from the highest office in the land. Helen Keller—who overcame the dual challenge of being deaf and blind to become a global symbol of resilience and advocacy—was honored with a personal letter from President John F. Kennedy recognizing her life’s work.

By the time she settled in Easton, Connecticut, Keller had already achieved international acclaim as the first deaf-blind person to graduate from college and as a tireless advocate for people with disabilities. Her groundbreaking work as a writer, speaker, and activist touched causes from labor rights to women’s suffrage and brought her face-to-face with multiple U.S. presidents.

President Kennedy’s message praised Keller’s tireless work on behalf of the blind and deaf, calling her legacy “legendary in [her] own time” and crediting her efforts with strengthening both American democracy and global goodwill. It was one of many honors she would receive—including the Presidential Medal of Freedom just three years later.

From a young girl in Alabama to a revered public figure in Connecticut, Helen Keller’s life was a testament to perseverance, purpose, and the power of education to transform the world.
