THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

How a Bold Energy Experiment Reshaped the State’s Landscape—and Created a Beloved Summer Destination

In the summer of 1926, the Connecticut Light & Power Company set out to do something no one in the U.S. had attempted before: build a massive man-made lake that doubled as a giant battery.

Their goal? To generate hydroelectric power using a system that pumped water uphill from the Housatonic River into a massive reservoir, then released it downhill through turbines to produce electricity during peak demand.

Over the next two years, the company transformed more than 5,000 acres of farmland, forest, and the former village of Jerusalem—spanning five towns—into what we now know as Candlewood Lake.

The project displaced dozens of families, demolished over 100 structures, and even relocated cemeteries. It took 4,500 acres of hand-cleared land, miles of pipe, and a labor force of 1,400 to bring it all together.

By the fall of 1928, Candlewood Lake was officially full—Connecticut's largest lake, created not by nature but by vision, ambition, and utility-grade muscle. Today, it’s a go-to destination for boating, fishing, and lakeside living—but its roots are steeped in industry and innovation.
