THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The 18th-century doctor who believed compassion—not chains—could heal the mind.

Eli Todd, born in New Haven in 1769, changed the course of mental health treatment in America—starting right here in Connecticut. A Yale grad and practicing physician, Todd broke with the harsh norms of his time, advocating for humane, science-backed care for those suffering from mental illness. His personal experience with his sister’s mental health struggles pushed him to see mental illness not as a moral failing, but a medical issue that could be treated with respect and care.

In 1824, Todd opened the Connecticut Retreat for the Insane in Hartford, becoming its first director. His revolutionary approach emphasized recovery and reintegration into society—an idea that was decades ahead of its time. The hospital he founded later became known as the Institute of Living, which remains a major mental health center today.

Beyond mental health, Todd was also vocal about the dangers of alcohol abuse. He promoted early temperance efforts, pushing for a mix of social reform, education, and legal deterrents to fight alcoholism in his community.

Thanks to his compassion and conviction, Eli Todd helped lay the foundation for modern mental health care—not just in Connecticut, but across the country.
