New Haven's Famous Hamburger
Long before hamburgers became a staple across the country, a small lunch wagon in New Haven was serving what many consider America's very first hamburger. In 1900, owner Louis Lassen quickly prepared a meal by placing freshly cooked ground steak between two slices of toast for a customer who needed something fast to eat.
The story has become an important part of Connecticut history, and in 2000, the Library of Congress officially recognized Louis' Lunch as the birthplace of the American hamburger. Even more remarkably, the restaurant still uses the original broiler that cooked those first burgers more than a century ago.
