When Connecticut Banned the Beatles
In the summer of 1966, several Connecticut radio stations joined a nationwide boycott of The Beatles after controversial remarks made by John Lennon about religion sparked public outrage. Although the interview had taken place months earlier in England, it quickly became headline news after excerpts were republished in an American magazine.
Stations across the state temporarily removed Beatles songs from their playlists, though some broadcasters continued to play the band's music. Connecticut became part of a much larger movement that spread throughout the United States and even reached other countries, fueling protests and intense media attention.
The backlash followed The Beatles for the remainder of their 1966 U.S. tour and is widely considered a turning point in the band's history. Just a few weeks later, the group performed its final concert before stepping away from touring and focusing entirely on studio recordings.
