THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
The Connecticut Inventor Who Walked Into Lincoln’s Office
Manchester inventor Christopher Miner Spencer grew up fascinated by machinery and firearms, eventually earning more than 40 patents throughout his career. His biggest breakthrough came with the Model 1860 Spencer repeating rifle, which could fire seven shots in rapid succession.
After struggling to get the War Department’s attention, Spencer took a bold approach. In 1863, he arrived at the White House carrying his rifle and ammunition and personally demonstrated it for President Abraham Lincoln. Impressed by its speed and ease of use, Lincoln invited Spencer back for a hands-on demonstration and recommended the rifle to the War Department.
The military eventually came around, with the Navy placing an order first and the Army following soon after. By the end of the Civil War, more than 100,000 Spencer rifles had been produced for the U.S. military, cementing the Connecticut inventor’s place in firearms history.
