THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Old Nan’s Final Crossing

For more than a century, ā€œOld Nan,ā€ the 1907 railroad drawbridge spanning the Niantic River between East Lyme and Waterford, played a vital role in Connecticut’s transportation history.

Built as a rolling bascule bridge with two tracks, it was one of five moveable bridges along the Northeast Corridor and allowed both trains and boats to pass—though its design eventually struggled to keep up with modern speeds and maritime traffic.

After decades of faithfully carrying trains, including Amtrak’s Acela, Old Nan made its final crossing in September 2012. A brand-new bridge, constructed just 58 feet south of the original, now accommodates faster trains and wider, two-lane boat traffic, modernizing a critical section of the nation’s busiest rail line.

While Old Nan no longer spans the Niantic River, parts of the historic bridge—including the control house, chains, and builder plate—found a home at the Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum in Willimantic, preserving its legacy for generations to come.

HEADLINES AROUND THE STATE

Newtown Restaurant to Close After Accident
After nearly 30 years serving the community, Mexicali Rose in Newtown is permanently closing. The announcement comes weeks after a car crashed into the restaurant, and the owners cited staff health concerns as a reason for shutting down. Final service ends September 21.

Connecticut Storms Leave Thousands Without Power
Severe thunderstorms swept across the state last weekend, bringing winds up to 60 mph, heavy rain, and downed trees. Thousands of residents experienced power outages, and some roads in Salisbury were temporarily blocked due to fallen trees.

Fussy Coffee Shuts Its Doors in New Haven
The Science Park coffee shop Fussy Coffee, a neighborhood gathering spot since 2018, is closing permanently. Employees say they were blindsided by the news, and Yale University Properties confirmed the retail space will soon host new tenants.

Longtime Windsor Locks Eatery Retires
S. New China, a Main Street fixture for decades, has closed as the owners retire. Known for its takeout and delivery services, the restaurant leaves behind a legacy of friendly service and authentic Chinese cuisine, though no replacement tenant has been announced yet.
