THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
The Great September Gale of 1815
In September 1815, Connecticut was struck by one of the most powerful storms in its history—the Great September Gale. Making landfall at Old Saybrook, it tore through New England with winds estimated at 135 miles per hour, a force that would be considered a Category 3 hurricane today.
The storm battered Connecticut’s eastern shoreline the hardest. In New London, six-foot waves crashed into the harbor, while in Stonington, tides rose an astonishing seventeen feet above previous records. Ships splintered against docks, farms were destroyed, and thousands of livestock were lost.
Though Rhode Island bore even greater flooding along Narragansett Bay, Connecticut’s coastal communities were forever marked by the disaster.
By the time the skies cleared, at least 38 lives across New England were lost and millions in damages tallied, making the Great September Gale of 1815 a storm remembered for generations.

Being a homeowner comes with plenty of ups and downs, and unexpected repairs fall in the latter bucket. Purchasing a home warranty, which typically covers system and appliance malfunctions from normal wear and tear, can help give you peace of mind.
