THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The Last Swing: Babe Ruth’s Final Game In Hartford

Connecticut has a rich history of memorable sports moments, and one of the most iconic took place in Hartford when baseball legend Babe Ruth stepped onto the field for his final game.

By 1945, Ruth had already retired from professional baseball for a decade, but his name still carried unmatched star power. That year, he participated in a charity exhibition game featuring the Savitt Gems of Hartford and the New Britain Codys, delighting a crowd of 2,500 fans at Bulkeley Stadium.

Ruth’s appearance was organized by Bill Savitt, a local jeweler known for bringing top-tier baseball talent to Connecticut for special events. Dressed in a bright red cap and matching Gems uniform, the 51-year-old Ruth hit several home runs during pre-game demonstrations, thrilling spectators and leaving a lasting impression on the local sports community.

When it came to game-time at-bats, Ruth’s performance was more subdued, prompting his famously wry comment that “some days the pitches look like watermelons, and other days like peanuts.”

Unbeknownst to everyone at the time, this Hartford exhibition would mark the final game of Ruth’s illustrious career. In the following months, his health declined, leading to a diagnosis of advanced esophageal cancer in 1946 and his passing in 1948.

Connecticut residents were lucky enough to witness one last swing from a living legend, cementing this event as a cherished moment in the state’s sports history.

If you thought supply chain issues and cost spikes were in the rearview mirror, think again.

Aging vehicles are driving up maintenance expenses, parts and repair costs are climbing due to new tariffs, and acquisition budgets are being stretched to the limit.

An Endurance car warranty helps protect you from costly surprises by covering major components like your engine, transmission, and electrical systems—now with $300 off a new contract.
