THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Honoring Thomas Hooker

Connecticut’s history is full of influential figures, but few left a mark as enduring as Thomas Hooker, the Puritan minister who founded Hartford in 1636.

Born in England in 1586, Hooker emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony seeking religious freedom. Disagreements with Boston clergy led him and a group of followers to establish a new settlement along the Connecticut River, laying the foundation for the city of Hartford.

Hooker is also remembered for his 1638 sermon on governance, in which he declared, ā€œThe foundation of authority is laid firstly in the free consent of the people,ā€ an early expression of democratic principles that would resonate through American history.

Nearly 300 years later, in 1950, Hartford commemorated Hooker with a striking eight-foot statue outside the Old State House. Sculpted by Frances Laughlin Wadsworth, the statue was modeled using the likenesses of Hooker’s descendants, as no authentic images of the minister exist. Set atop a granite pedestal inscribed with his famous words, the monument continues to honor the life and vision of one of Connecticut’s most significant historical figures.

Veterinarians nationwide reported that corporate managers pushed clinics to focus on profit, with vets often paid based on revenue. This encouraged them to see more pets, order more tests, and upsell services, creating a growing burden for uninsured pet owners. Pet insurance could help you offset some of these rising costs, with some providing up to 90% reimbursement.

HEADLINES AROUND THE STATE

Early Voting Begins Across Connecticut
Connecticut voters can now cast ballots early for the 2025 municipal elections, with polling open through November 2. Early voting is available at designated locations in each town, offering greater convenience before Election Day on November 4. Officials encourage participation, noting that every vote helps shape local issues from schools to public works.

State Braces for Possible Wildfire Surge
Connecticut fire officials are warning residents to stay vigilant this fall, following last year’s record-setting wildfire season. Dry conditions, fallen leaves, and dead trees have created ideal conditions for brush fires. State forester Chris Martin emphasizes that most wildfires are human-caused, urging caution with outdoor fires and open burn permits.

Storm Leaves Hundreds Without Power
An overnight storm early Monday morning brought heavy rain and gusty winds, causing widespread power outages across Connecticut. Eversource and United Illuminating reported more than 1,200 outages at the peak on Monday, though crews are working to restore electricity. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay updated on service restoration.

Hartford HealthCare Acquires Two Hospitals
Hartford HealthCare will purchase Manchester Memorial and Rockville General hospitals for $86.1 million after no other bids emerged in bankruptcy court. The deal expands the system to nine hospitals statewide and will require state regulatory approval. Local lawmakers hope the acquisition will restore services and improve financial stability at the struggling facilities.
