THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
The Rise of the Temperance Movement
In the early 1800s, Connecticut became a hub for the growing temperance movement, a nationwide effort to curb alcohol consumption and its social impacts. Advocates believed that alcohol contributed to violence, unemployment, and other societal problems, and they worked tirelessly to promote sobriety through education, speeches, and public gatherings.
One notable event saw the steamboat Greenfield ferry participants down the Connecticut River to a Temperance Convention in Middletown. The two-day gathering included lively processions through the streets, music, and songs like Hurrah for Bright Water, with marchers ranging from children to local college faculty. Hymnbooks were even sold by a local bookseller so attendees could sing along, highlighting the movementâs community spirit.
Influential leaders, including Reverend Lyman Beecher, helped propel the cause, and by the mid-1830s thousands of local societies were actively promoting temperance across the state. This event reflects Connecticutâs early commitment to social reform and the ways communities came together to advocate for change.
