ON THIS DAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY: SGT. STUBBY REPORTS FOR DUTY
On February 5, 1918, a small stray dog named Stubby officially “deployed” to the front lines of World War I alongside Connecticut soldiers of the 102nd Regiment, Yankee Division.
What started as an act of companionship turned into one of the most incredible stories of heroism, as this unlikely war dog went on to become the most decorated canine of the Great War.
Stubby’s journey began in 1917 when he wandered onto Yale University’s training grounds, where the 102nd Regiment was preparing for battle. A young soldier named Robert Conroy took in the short-tailed pup, and when the unit shipped off to France, he smuggled Stubby aboard their transport. The dog quickly won over officers by learning to salute, and from that moment, he became an official member of the regiment.
Over the course of 17 battles in the trenches, Stubby proved to be more than just a mascot—he was a lifesaver. After surviving a mustard gas attack, he learned to detect the deadly fumes and warn troops before they could be exposed. He helped medics locate wounded soldiers, boosted morale among weary troops, and even captured a German spy attempting to infiltrate American lines—an act that earned him the rank of Sergeant.
Following the war, Sgt. Stubby became a national hero, receiving medals, honorary memberships in veterans' organizations, and even marching in patriotic parades wearing a custom-made coat covered in his accolades. By the time he passed in 1926, he had met three U.S. Presidents and left a legacy as America’s most famous war dog.
Today, we remember the fearless little pup from Connecticut who made history on the battlefield. 🐶🎖️
