If you’re a homeowner, you know unexpected expenses are par for the course. One way to help shield your finances is to get a home warranty.

Unlike homeowners insurance, which covers natural disasters and theft, a home warranty could help safeguard you against costly repairs of eligible essential home appliances and systems due to normal wear and tear.

Sarah Boone: The Connecticut Woman Who Revolutionized Ironing

On April 26, 1892, Sarah Boone of New Haven became the first Black woman in Connecticut to receive a U.S. patent, improving the ironing board’s design to make pressing fitted garments easier.

Born in 1832 in North Carolina, Boone, who is believed to have escaped slavery, moved to Connecticut with her husband, James, in the mid-1850s. As a dressmaker, she recognized the difficulty of ironing tight sleeves and curved seams on women’s dresses, leading her to develop an innovative solution.

Boone’s patent #473,653 introduced a narrow, curved, reversible ironing board with a movable support, allowing for better pressing of intricate garments.

While ironing boards had existed in various forms for centuries, Boone’s design was a major step forward in efficiency and ease of use. She became only the fourth known Black woman in the U.S. to receive a patent, joining pioneers like Judy W. Reed, Sarah E. Goode, and Miriam E. Benjamin.

Boone passed away in 1904 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven, leaving behind a legacy of innovation that forever changed household efficiency.
