Spring celebration takes over downtown New Haven with flowers, art, history, and community.
If you’re looking for a great excuse to spend a spring Saturday in New Haven, this is it.
On Saturday, May 10 from 10 am to 5 pm, the Garden Club of New Haven is celebrating 100 years of beautifying the Elm City with a daylong centennial celebration filled with free activities, floral art, history, local artists, and more—all centered around the New Haven Green.
But this is a whole lot more than a garden party. It’s a deep dive into the cultural, environmental, and civic legacy of one of Connecticut’s most dedicated community organizations. And it’s all happening alongside the annual Wake Up the Green Festival, making downtown New Haven the place to be for the weekend and offering the perfect Connecticut springtime activity.
Expect everything from kids’ flower workshops and gardening advice to free seed packets, artists painting live, and floral arrangements inspired by great literary works. There will be walking tours, a screening at the New Haven Museum, and a celebration finale with music and cupcakes. To celebrate Earth Day, the Connecticut Department of Transportation has launched its Drive Less Connecticut Challenge. Running now through May 31, the challenge encourages residents to bike, walk, carpool, or take public transportation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help protect the environment.
Using the CTrides app, participants can log their trips and even win prizes. For every 17 trips eliminated, a tree will be planted through One Tree Planted, with a goal of 2,000 trees. The campaign aims to reduce 550,000 miles of single-occupant vehicle travel, save $375,000 in fuel costs, and eliminate 35,000 car trips.
