🗺️ THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY: THE BATTLE OF RIDGEFIELD
Connecticut militia take a stand after Danbury’s destruction
In April 1777, British troops burned Danbury’s supply depot — but their retreat was met with fierce resistance. Patriot forces led by Generals Wooster, Silliman, and Arnold ambushed the British in Ridgefield, sparking one of the most dramatic inland battles of the Revolution.
Though the British ultimately reached the coast, they suffered heavy losses. The battle, remembered for the bravery of Benedict Arnold and the death of General Wooster, ensured the British never again launched major inland attacks in Connecticut.
To this day, Ridgefield remains a symbol of local resolve and revolutionary spirit.
