🏛️ COLUMBUS STATUE FINDS A NEW HOME IN NEW HAVEN MUSEUM
A historic monument moves to the Lost in New Haven Museum
After being removed in 2020 during national calls for racial justice, New Haven’s Christopher Columbus statue finally has a new resting place: the Lost in New Haven Museum. City officials and museum leaders announced an agreement last week to display the 1892 statue as part of a broader exhibit that tells all sides of New Haven’s story.
The decision comes after years of community debate and even a failed lawsuit to restore the statue to its original home in Wooster Square. Now, the museum aims to present it within the context of both Italian-American heritage and the Indigenous history of the land it stands on.
Controversial? Sure. But also a meaningful step in preserving complex local history in a space made for thoughtful conversation.
Plan a future visit to the Lost in New Haven Museum to see for yourself.

THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
The Largest Earthquake Ever Recorded in Connecticut Shakes the Moodus Region
On May 16, 1791, Connecticut experienced its largest recorded earthquake, centered in Moodus, a village within the town of East Haddam. Known to local Native Americans as “Machimoodus,” meaning “the place of noises,” this area had long been notorious for seismic activity.
The earthquake struck with two powerful shocks, quickly followed by several aftershocks. A large fissure, several meters in length, opened in the ground, and more than 100 aftershocks rattled the region throughout the night. The tremors were so strong that they caused significant damage, knocking down stone walls, chimneys, and other structures. The quake’s effects were felt far beyond Connecticut, with reports of it reaching as far as New York City and Boston.
Although the 1791 earthquake remains the most significant in the state’s history, the Moodus area has continued to experience seismic activity over the years. Notably, in 2011, a mild earthquake with a magnitude of 1.3 on the Richter scale was recorded, and a series of smaller quakes, known as a “swarm,” occurred in 2015, reminding residents that the region’s geological activity is far from over.
