THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
How Connecticut Paved the Way for Safer Roads with America’s First Motor Vehicle Speed Law
Connecticut made history by becoming the very first state to pass a law regulating automobile speeds. Back in 1901, when cars were still a new and exciting invention, the state set clear limits: no faster than 15 miles per hour outside city limits, and a maximum of 12 miles per hour within cities.
The law didn’t just stop at numbers—it also required drivers to slow down at intersections and crossings, and even come to a full stop if their car spooked a nearby horse. Imagine that, cars having to respect horses on the road!
Breaking the speed law wasn’t cheap either. Offenders faced fines up to $200, a hefty sum given that cars back then cost less than $1,000 on average. This pioneering move showed Connecticut’s early commitment to balancing innovation with public safety—a legacy that still shapes our roads today.

Did you know that the World Wide Web was born in Geneva, Switzerland? Indeed, the first version of the Internet cropped up at CERN in 1989. Today the world-renowned center is home to the largest particle accelerator and to the CERN Science Gateway – a must-see hub for science enthusiasts that features hands-on exhibits, immersive virtual reality experiences, and live demonstrations.
