In June of 1982, Connecticut shifted gears in consumer protection by passing the first-ever Lemon Law in the United States—making history and saving future drivers from major headaches. Officially titled Chapter 743b “Automotive Warranties”, this law was designed to protect buyers stuck with brand-new cars that turned out to be duds.

Spearheaded by State Representative John J. Woodcock III, the groundbreaking legislation was signed into law by Governor William A. O’Neill. It gave consumers a way to fight back when new vehicles didn’t live up to the manufacturer’s promises—especially when repairs failed after multiple attempts.

Thanks to this law, if a new car just can’t seem to get its act together, buyers have a legal path to refunds or replacements. It was a major win for drivers—and a moment that helped steer the rest of the country toward stronger consumer protection laws. Connecticut didn’t just set the standard—it put the whole nation on notice.
