THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
How the Nationâs First Lemon Law Put Car Buyers in the Driverâs Seat
In June of 1982, Connecticut shifted gears in consumer protection by passing the first-ever Lemon Law in the United Statesâmaking history and saving future drivers from major headaches. Officially titled Chapter 743b âAutomotive Warrantiesâ, this law was designed to protect buyers stuck with brand-new cars that turned out to be duds.
Spearheaded by State Representative John J. Woodcock III, the groundbreaking legislation was signed into law by Governor William A. OâNeill. It gave consumers a way to fight back when new vehicles didnât live up to the manufacturerâs promisesâespecially when repairs failed after multiple attempts.
Thanks to this law, if a new car just canât seem to get its act together, buyers have a legal path to refunds or replacements. It was a major win for driversâand a moment that helped steer the rest of the country toward stronger consumer protection laws. Connecticut didnât just set the standardâit put the whole nation on notice.
