THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
How Two Connecticut Delegates Helped Unite the States
In the summer of 1787, as tensions ran high at the Constitutional Convention, two Connecticut delegates—Roger Sherman and Oliver Ellsworth—stepped in with a game-changing idea that would define American democracy.
The issue? Large states wanted representation based on population; smaller states demanded equal say. The solution? What’s now known as The Connecticut Compromise (aka The Great Compromise). Sherman and Ellsworth proposed a two-house legislature: proportional representation in the House of Representatives and equal representation in the Senate. It wasn’t perfect (representation was based on total white population and three-fifths of the Black population), but it was enough to move the Convention forward.
It passed by just one vote—but that single decision would lay the groundwork for the structure of Congress we still use today.
