THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Student Pilot Crash-Lands at Mount Tobe Airport

In August 1940, a routine training flight in Plymouth nearly ended in disaster when a student pilot’s plane engine stalled just 75 feet off the ground. The aircraft struck the runway, bounced, and then nosed into the ground.

The 27-year-old instructor escaped with only bruises, while his 24-year-old student sustained a forehead cut requiring stitches. Both were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital by police escort.

Despite the dramatic crash, the men walked away with relatively minor injuries. The damaged plane was valued at only $200–$300—a small price compared to what could have been a far more tragic outcome.
