THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
The Final Bell for Danbury Fair
For over a century, the Danbury Fair stood as a cornerstone of New Englandâs autumn traditions.
Starting in 1869, what began as a modest gathering of local farmers and crafters soon blossomed into a sprawling annual event, featuring amusement rides, races, traveling shows, and agricultural contests. At its peak, the fair drew hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the region.
Central to the fairgrounds was its iconic oval racetrack, where harness races gave way to midget car and stock car competitions in the early 20th century. The fairâs organizers, led for decades by the Leahy family, became masters of promotion, employing creative strategies from advertising in Times Square to arranging bus transport from major cities, and even hiring a Theodore Roosevelt impersonator to draw crowds.
After the death of organizer John Leahy in 1974, the fair continued to thrive, but without a clear successor, its future was uncertain.
The Danbury Fair held its final run in 1981, marking the end of the oldest continuously operating annual fair in the United States. The historic grounds were later transformed into the Danbury Fair Mall, preserving the siteâs name but replacing the rides and races with shops and modern attractions.
