THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Building a Bridge That Stood the Test of Time

In the late 1800s, travelers crossed the Connecticut River between Hartford and East Hartford on a sprawling wooden covered bridge until a devastating 1895 fire reduced it to ashes before a crowd of thousands. Makeshift crossings and ferry lines kept the city connected while engineers planned something more enduring.

That vision became reality in 1904 with the construction of the Hartford Bridge — a nine-arch stone masterpiece stretching nearly 1,200 feet.

Made from over 100,000 cubic tons of pink and gray granite, it was hailed as the world’s largest stone arch bridge and celebrated as “an ornament to the city which should endure forever.”

When it officially opened in 1908, Hartford hosted a three-day festival complete with fireworks, boat parades, and a march of more than 10,000 proud workers.

Later renamed the Bulkeley Bridge in honor of Governor Morgan Bulkeley, this enduring landmark continues to carry thousands of travelers daily and acts as a living testament to Connecticut’s ingenuity and pride.

Check out our top-rated pet insurance providers, with some plans offering coverage for just $1 a day, multi-pet coverage, and reimbursement options of up to 90%. With the right coverage, you could keep your pet (and your wallet) happy.
