THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The Final Voyage of the HMS Bounty

Few ships have captured the world’s imagination quite like the HMS Bounty. Originally made famous for the infamous 1789 mutiny against Captain William Bligh, her legend lived on through a painstakingly accurate replica built in 1960 for MGM’s Mutiny on the Bounty.

After its Hollywood debut, the replica became a floating piece of history — restored, reimagined, and even featured in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Between film shoots, she sailed as a training vessel and maritime attraction, inspiring awe wherever she docked.

In October 2012, the Bounty made a memorable stop in New London, Connecticut, where Navy sailors and visitors marveled at her towering masts and timeless craftsmanship. Days later, she departed for Florida — unknowingly embarking on her final voyage.

Caught in the fury of Hurricane Sandy, the ship was overwhelmed by massive waves and brutal winds. Despite a heroic Coast Guard rescue, one crew member perished, and Captain Robin Walbridge was lost to the sea. The Bounty’s last journey began on Connecticut shores — a haunting reminder of both the beauty and peril of life at sea.
