THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Taft’s Triumphant Visit to Middletown
Connecticut residents turned out in record numbers to welcome President William Howard Taft to Middletown, creating one of the largest crowds the city had ever seen. The visit honored the inauguration of Wesleyan University’s new president, William Shanklin, and marked the first time a sitting U.S. President had visited Middletown in over 75 years.
President Taft and Vice President James Sherman arrived by train and rode through a parade route lined with cheering citizens, decorative arches, and patriotic banners. The motorcade was accompanied by seventy-five Civil War veterans, fife and drum corps, and other local organizations, creating a festive and historic atmosphere.
After delivering an address celebrating the achievements of college graduates, Taft received an honorary doctorate and attended an evening banquet with dignitaries and alumni. The day ended with a dazzling fireworks display over the Connecticut River, capping one of Middletown’s most memorable celebrations.
