A colorful coastal display with heart (and a great cause)

Niantic’s shoreline gets a creative glow-up with the return of Buoys by the Bay, now in its third year. More than 150 hand-decorated buoys hang throughout Scheer Park, transforming the trees along Main Street into a playful, seaside art installation that’s equal parts charming and meaningful.

Each buoy supports two local nonprofits, with proceeds going back into community programs and events throughout the year. New this season, painted fish created by children from the Niantic Children’s Museum join the display, adding an extra layer of color and community spirit. Open 24/7 and perfect for a casual stroll, it’s a simple stop that feels distinctly coastal Connecticut.

Local food, warm vibes, all winter long

Cold weather doesn’t stop Wallingford’s farmers market. This indoor winter market runs every Saturday morning, bringing local produce, baked goods, and handmade items into a cozy, easy-to-browse space just steps from its outdoor location.

With plenty of parking and a relaxed pace, it’s an ideal weekend errand that actually feels enjoyable. Whether you’re stocking up on essentials or just browsing what local vendors have to offer, this market keeps the community connected through the winter months.

A guided winter walk through a rare coastal habitat

This special birding program pairs expert guidance with a unique natural setting just steps from the Bruce Museum. Participants will walk to the nearby Oneida Sanctuary, one of Greenwich’s last remaining coastal salt marshes, to spot waterfowl, shorebirds, herons, and egrets that rely on this protected habitat.

Along the way, you’ll also learn about Audubon’s conservation efforts and how these marshlands support coastal resilience. It’s a calm, educational way to get outside in winter and see a side of Connecticut that often goes unnoticed.

THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The Explorer Who Became Connecticut’s Governor for One Day

Hiram Bingham III lived a life few could match. An archaeologist who helped introduce Machu Picchu to the world, a Yale professor, World War I pilot, and bestselling author, Bingham built a reputation as both an adventurer and a scholar long before entering public office.

His growing national profile eventually carried him into Connecticut politics. Voters elected him lieutenant governor in the early 1920s, and soon after he ran for — and won — the governorship, propelled by his intellect, ambition, and public appeal.

At the same time, an unexpected vacancy opened in Connecticut’s U.S. Senate delegation following the death of Senator Frank Brandegee. Bingham accepted the party’s nomination for the Senate seat as well, winning that election too and creating a rare constitutional dilemma.

Unable to serve in both roles, Bingham chose a practical solution. He was sworn in as governor for a single day before resigning, allowing his lieutenant governor to take office without a special election. He then headed to Washington as a U.S. senator, leaving behind one of the most unusual — and shortest — gubernatorial terms in Connecticut history.

Debate Grows Over Protecting Connecticut’s Riparian Buffers

A low-key but high-stakes legislative discussion is unfolding around riparian buffers, the vegetated areas along rivers and wetlands that help reduce flooding and protect water quality. Supporters want clearer statewide protections, while developers and some state officials warn new rules could complicate housing and infrastructure projects.

Mid-Rise Apartments Are Reshaping Town Centers

Access Health CT Extends Enrollment Deadline to Jan. 31

GameStop Continues Closing Connecticut Locations

Several GameStop stores across Connecticut have recently closed, with at least one more set to shut its doors later this month. The closures are part of a nationwide downsizing as the gaming retailer reviews store performance and adjusts to changing consumer habits.
