THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Groton Launches a New Era of Naval Power

In the mid-20th century, the shoreline of Groton became the stage for a global turning point in naval history. At the General Dynamics shipyard along the Thames River, the USS Nautilus was launched, introducing the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine and ushering the U.S. Navy into a new technological era.

Unlike traditional diesel submarines, Nautilus was powered by a nuclear reactor, allowing it to travel farther, move faster, and remain submerged for extended periods without refueling or surfacing. Its advanced onboard systems made months-long missions possible, redefining what submarines could do and setting new standards for endurance and performance.

Following years of testing and groundbreaking voyages—including record-setting underwater journeys and becoming the first vessel to travel beneath the North Pole—Nautilus served for more than two decades before being retired. Today, the submarine remains in Groton as a floating museum at the Submarine Force Museum, a lasting symbol of Connecticut’s role in reshaping naval innovation and global military history.

Did you know some credit cards can actually help you get out of debt faster? Yes, it sounds crazy. But it’s true.

The secret: Find a card with a “0% intro APR" period for balance transfers. Then, transfer your debt balance and pay it down as much as possible during the intro period. No interest means you could pay off the debt faster.
