THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
The First American Bishop And A Divided Nation
In the years following the American Revolution, Connecticut played a key role in shaping the future of religion in the newly independent nation. A group of clergy gathered in Woodbury to choose Samuel Seabury as the first Episcopal bishop in the United States—a major step in establishing an American-led church separate from England.
But Seabury’s path wasn’t exactly smooth. As a former Loyalist who had opposed American independence, his appointment came with tension. When he traveled to England to be officially ordained, he ran into a major obstacle: the required oath of allegiance to the British Crown, which he couldn’t take as an American citizen.
Instead, Seabury found a workaround through the Scottish Episcopal Church, which allowed him to be consecrated without that oath. He returned to Connecticut and spent years helping build the Episcopal Church in the U.S., traveling across the region and laying the groundwork for a religious institution that could exist independently from British control.

From protein-packed pasta to plant-based burrito bowls, they’ve got options for every eater. And the best part? Everything arrives fresh, heats up in minutes, and makes healthy eating feel effortless. Make weeknights simpler—and healthier. Get 50% off your first order today.
