THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The Founding Father Behind the Supreme Court

Oliver Ellsworth, born in Windsor in 1745, was a key figure in the early formation of the United States. After graduating from what is now Princeton University, he served as a lawyer and later joined the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War, helping guide the colonies through a critical period of change.

At the Constitutional Convention, Ellsworth played a pivotal role when disagreements over representation threatened to stall the creation of a new government. Working alongside Roger Sherman, he helped develop the “Connecticut Compromise,” which balanced power between large and small states by establishing a two-house Congress—an idea that remains central to the U.S. system today.

Ellsworth’s impact extended into the judicial branch as well. As a U.S. senator, he helped pass the Judiciary Act of 1789, which created the structure of the federal court system, including the Supreme Court. He later became the nation’s third Chief Justice, shaping how the court operated in its early years and leaving behind a legacy that still influences the country today.
