THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Hartford Helped Launch the First Mass-Produced Electric Car
Long before Tesla and modern electric vehicles, Hartford was already helping shape the future of transportation. In 1897, inventor and bicycle manufacturer Albert Augustus Pope unveiled the Columbia Motor Carriage outside his Hartford factory, marking the debut of America’s first mass-produced electric car.
The vehicle could reach speeds of up to 15 miles per hour and impressed crowds by smoothly climbing steep city roads while operating quietly and cleanly compared to gas-powered cars of the era. Pope believed electric vehicles were the future, and for a time, his company became one of the biggest automobile producers in the country. By 1899, Pope’s factories were responsible for nearly half of all American car production.
Despite its early success, electric vehicles eventually lost ground as gasoline-powered cars became cheaper and easier to produce. Limited access to electricity outside major cities also made electric cars less practical for many Americans. Pope’s company ultimately closed in 1912, but Hartford’s role in early electric vehicle history remains a fascinating chapter in Connecticut innovation.
