A Presidential First At The Coast Guard Academy
The United States Coast Guard Academy in New London hosted a historic graduation ceremony in 1964 when President Lyndon B. Johnson became the first sitting U.S. president to deliver a commencement address at the academy. Johnson chose to honor plans originally made by President John F. Kennedy, who had intended to speak to the graduating class before his assassination in 1963.
Arriving by helicopter to a ceremonial welcome, Johnson addressed graduates, military families, and guests gathered on campus. His speech reflected on the responsibilities of military service during a time marked by Cold War tensions and emphasized the importance of using America's strength in pursuit of peace.
Following the ceremony, Johnson personally administered the Officer's Oath and presented diplomas to the graduating class. In a unique gesture, the graduates presented the president with a customized class ring and named him an honorary member of the Class of 1964, cementing the event as one of the most memorable commencements in academy history.
