THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Connecticut's First Union Officer Lost In Battle

Theodore Winthrop, a Yale graduate and descendant of two of Connecticut's most influential colonial leaders, was among the earliest Union officers to serve during the Civil War. Before entering military service, he pursued a career as a writer and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe.

In June 1861, Winthrop was serving as a major under Union General Benjamin Butler when he took part in the Battle of Big Bethel in Virginia, one of the war's first land battles. As Union forces struggled against Confederate defenses, Winthrop reportedly attempted to rally retreating soldiers for another charge before being fatally wounded. At just 32 years old, he became the first Union officer killed in battle during the conflict.

Although his military career was brief, Winthrop's legacy continued after his death. Several of his literary works were published posthumously and gained widespread popularity, helping establish his reputation as both a Civil War hero and an accomplished writer whose name would be remembered far beyond Connecticut.
