THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
The Liberty Bell’s 1903 Connecticut Tour
In June 1903, the Liberty Bell passed through Connecticut as part of a national rail tour heading to Boston for the 128th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill. Mounted on an open train car, it made brief, highly anticipated stops that turned train stations into crowded public viewing points.
The bell reached Stamford just after 6:00 p.m., drawing a large crowd for a quick look before continuing on to Bridgeport and New Haven later that evening. Each stop lasted only minutes, but the excitement was immediate and intense as people gathered along the tracks to witness the historic symbol in transit.
The next day, the tour continued through Hartford, where over 10,000 people gathered despite heavy rain to see the bell up close. After additional stops in eastern Connecticut, it left the state for Rhode Island and eventually Boston, completing a fast-moving but memorable statewide moment.
