The Creation of Candlewood Lake
What is now Connecticut's largest lake didn't always exist. Candlewood Lake, which spans more than 8 square miles across five towns, was created in the 1920s as part of an ambitious hydroelectric power project led by Connecticut Light and Power. The goal was to generate reliable electricity while carefully controlling water levels using innovative turbine technology.
Creating the lake required an enormous effort. Thousands of acres of forest were cleared, more than 100 homes and buildings were moved or demolished, and much of the former village of Jerusalem was flooded as the reservoir gradually filled. While most landowners sold their property, a handful chose not to, leaving small sections of the lakebed privately owned to this day.
Completed in 1928, Candlewood Lake quickly became more than a source of hydroelectric power. Today, it's one of Connecticut's most popular destinations for boating, fishing, swimming, and lakeside living, serving both residents and visitors nearly a century after its creation.

Major Traffic Change Coming to I-91 in Meriden
Drivers should prepare for a permanent traffic change as Exit 17 on I-91 North closes on July 16 as part of the ongoing I-91/I-691/Route 15 interchange reconstruction project. Motorists traveling toward Route 15 North or I-691 West will need to use the newly aligned Exit 16, and officials warn GPS directions may take time to update.
Conservationists Concerned Over Declining Osprey Chicks
Wildlife experts and volunteers are reporting an alarming drop in osprey fledglings across Connecticut this nesting season. Researchers believe a decline in menhaden, a key food source for young ospreys, may be contributing to the problem, and additional studies are underway to better understand the cause.
Connecticut Blood Center Declares Blood Emergency
The Connecticut Blood Center has declared a blood emergency after supplies dropped below a two-day inventory. Officials are urging eligible residents—especially those with Type O blood—to donate as soon as possible to help hospitals meet the ongoing demand for lifesaving transfusions.

Registration is now open for Over the Edge, a unique fundraiser that gives participants the chance to rappel down Mohegan Sun's Sky Tower on August 28. Funds raised will support Special Olympics Connecticut, helping provide year-round sports opportunities for thousands of athletes across the state.
