A Mohegan Minister Who Helped Fund an Ivy League College
One of Connecticut's most influential Native American leaders, Samson Occom was born into the Mohegan Tribe in 1723 and became one of the first Indigenous Presbyterian ministers in colonial America. After studying under Reverend Eleazar Wheelock in Connecticut, Occom dedicated his life to preaching and education.
Wheelock later asked Occom to travel throughout England to raise money for an Indian school that would educate Native American students. During a demanding 17-month journey, Occom delivered more than 300 sermons and raised an extraordinary amount of funding to support the effort.
When Occom returned home, he discovered that the money he had helped raise had instead been used by Wheelock to establish what became Dartmouth College, rather than expanding the school originally intended for Native American education. Although deeply disappointed, Occom continued his ministry, published religious writings, and later founded the Brothertown Indian community, leaving behind a lasting legacy of faith, resilience, and leadership.
