THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

A Minister's Stand for Equality at Andover Lake

In the late 1920s, Andover Lake was created as a private summer community with discriminatory restrictions that prevented Black and Jewish families from purchasing property. Even after those restrictions faded, membership rules continued to keep many residents from fully enjoying the lake.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Rev. William M. Philpot, an African American minister from New Haven, repeatedly sought membership in the Andover Lake Property Owners Association after purchasing a cottage. Despite owning property, he was denied access to the lake multiple times because of the association's policies.

Rather than accept the injustice, Philpot peacefully asserted his right to use the lake. After a lengthy legal battle, the courts ruled in his favor, prompting the association to change its bylaws so all lake property owners could become members. Today, Andover Lake stands as a reminder of how one family's courage helped advance equality and create a more welcoming community for generations to come.
