BIRD FLU DETECTED IN NEW LONDON COUNTY

A backyard flock in New London County has tested positive for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) after contact with wild waterfowl near a pond, according to the Connecticut Department of Agriculture. The infected flock, which included chickens, ducks, and peacocks kept as family pets, has been depopulated to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus.

While there are no effective treatments or vaccines for H5N1 in poultry, state officials emphasized that no human cases have been reported in Connecticut.

The Department of Agriculture is urging poultry owners to enhance biosecurity measures to protect their birds. Recommended practices include keeping wild birds and rodents away from coops, avoiding contact between poultry and migratory waterfowl, and thoroughly cleaning hands and boots before entering poultry areas.

Signs of infection include sudden bird deaths, respiratory issues, diarrhea, and swelling around the eyes or head. Flock owners are encouraged to report any unusual illnesses or deaths to state or federal authorities.

FASCINATING CONNECTICUT HISTORY

P.T. Barnum: Bridgeport’s Showman Mayor

In 1875, at age 64, Phineas T. Barnum, famed showman and entrepreneur, was elected Mayor of Bridgeport. Known for his success as an entertainer and his moralistic political convictions, Barnum hoped to bring reform to his hometown.

During his brief tenure, he championed temperance, cracked down on gambling and brothels, and sought to reduce the size of city government. However, his strict policies clashed with Bridgeport’s Democratic council, leading to constant disputes and a tumultuous year in office.

After just nine months, Barnum announced he would not seek reelection, quipping that no one was happier about the decision than he was. Following his departure from politics, Barnum returned to the entertainment industry. In 1881, he merged his “Greatest Show on Earth” with James Bailey’s circus, creating the legendary “Barnum & Bailey’s Circus,” which ran for 137 years.

Despite his rocky mayoral term, Barnum’s legacy in Bridgeport endured. He donated land for Seaside Park, co-founded Bridgeport Hospital, and established the Barnum Institute of Science and History, now the Barnum Museum. After his death in 1891, the city erected a monument to honor its most famous citizen, cementing his status as a cultural icon and devoted philanthropist."
