CONNECTICUT HISTORY HIGHLIGHT
Anna Louise James: Connecticut’s Trailblazing Pharmacist
Born in Hartford on January 19, 1886, Anna Louise James was the eighth of 11 children in a remarkable family. Her father, Willis James, was a former slave who escaped via the Underground Railroad.
After moving to Old Saybrook, Anna graduated high school and pursued higher education, inspired by two family members who were among the few Black pharmacists in Connecticut. In 1908, she became the first African-American woman to graduate from the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy and earned her pharmacy license the following year, becoming Connecticut’s first African-American female pharmacist.
Anna returned to Old Saybrook to work at her brother-in-law’s drug store, eventually taking over and renaming it James’ Pharmacy in 1922. She became a beloved community figure, managing the pharmacy and its popular soda fountain for nearly five decades. Local residents, including famed actress Katharine Hepburn, frequented the pharmacy, where “Miss James” left a lasting impression as a kind and dedicated presence in the town.
After Anna’s death in 1977 at the age of 91, the historic pharmacy was repurposed as an ice cream parlor and later a gelateria and bed-and-breakfast.
Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a stop on the Connecticut Freedom Trail, the James Pharmacy stands as a testament to Anna’s pioneering spirit and enduring legacy as a trailblazer and community leader.
