🍽️ CONNECTICUT’S HISTORIC BRIDGEPORT FLYER DINER TO CLOSE
A decades-long tradition comes to an end
After 80 years serving the community, the Bridgeport Flyer Diner will officially close its doors this Sunday, February 23.
The family-run diner has been a staple in Milford, but the site will soon be redeveloped into 80 new apartments.
Owner Dennis Kokenos shared that it’s time to retire and watch his grandchildren grow up. Stop in for one last meal before it’s gone!

CONNECTICUT HISTORY: THE GREAT ICE STORM OF 1898
A Three-Day Freeze That Transformed Connecticut’s Landscape
On February 22, 1898, Connecticut emerged from one of the most devastating ice storms in its history.
While southern parts of the state saw only rain, the northwest hills endured three relentless days of freezing rain, encasing trees, buildings, and roads in up to seven inches of ice. The result was a scene of breathtaking destruction—roads became completely impassable, isolating families in their homes for days, while the weight of the ice caused trees to snap with sounds described as resembling Fourth of July fireworks.
The damage was especially severe on farms and town greens, where centuries-old trees were reduced to splintered remains. Even as residents struggled to clear the wreckage, they faced a new challenge that earlier generations had never encountered—widespread power and communication outages. The storm brought down telephone, telegraph, and electric lines, leaving communities cut off for extended periods.
Yet, this storm was also among the first to be thoroughly documented, thanks to photographers like Marie Kendall of Norfolk.
Her haunting images, now preserved by the Connecticut Historical Society, capture the storm’s brutal aftermath, offering a rare window into a turn-of-the-century natural disaster that left an indelible mark on Connecticut’s history.
