THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Samuel Huntington: Connecticut’s Forgotten First President
On March 1, 1781, the Articles of Confederation were officially ratified, marking the birth of the United States’ first national government.
This shift automatically elevated Samuel Huntington, a Connecticut lawyer and statesman, to the title of President of the United States in Congress Assembled—technically making him the first president of the new nation under its original system of government.
Born in what is now Scotland, Connecticut, Huntington was a self-taught lawyer who rose through the ranks of colonial politics to represent Connecticut in the Second Continental Congress.
A signer of the Declaration of Independence, he was widely respected for his steady leadership and unwavering work ethic, leading to his election as President of Congress in 1779. When the Articles took effect two years later, Huntington became the highest-ranking elected official in the young United States.
Just three months into his new role, satisfied that the government was running smoothly, Huntington resigned and returned to Connecticut. There, he continued shaping the state, serving as chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court, drafting early copyright laws, and ultimately being elected Governor in 1786. Re-elected nine times, he remained in office until his death in 1796.
Though often overlooked, Huntington’s brief but significant presidency secured his place in history as Connecticut’s quiet but powerful leader at a pivotal moment in America’s founding.

KEY STORIES HAPPENING RIGHT NOW
The City Trust parking garage in downtown Bridgeport is finally getting close to reopening after being closed since July 2023
Waterbury is moving to join the Connecticut Municipal Redevelopment Authority to support plans for transforming the Freight Street corridor into a mixed-use development with new housing, commercial space, and greenways. City officials see this as a major step in revitalizing the former industrial hub adjacent to downtown, leveraging state assistance for funding and redevelopment efforts.
Billy Joel took a tumble on stage while performing at Mohegan Sun Arena but quickly recovered to cheers from the crowd. The legendary singer is set to make history this summer with performances at Yankee Stadium, MetLife Stadium, and Citi Field, alongside Rod Stewart, Sting, and Stevie Nicks.
Guilford voters overwhelmingly approved the $3 million purchase of the former Mooring restaurant property, aiming to preserve coastal access and explore potential public uses like parks or food truck spaces. While some residents opposed the cost and flood risks, supporters see it as a "generational opportunity" to secure waterfront land for community use.
