ON THIS DAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY: THE TRAILBLAZING CAREER OF CLARE BOOTHE LUCE
Born on March 10, 1903, Connecticut’s first congresswoman, Clare Boothe Luce, lived a life filled with groundbreaking achievements. From playwright to war correspondent, magazine editor to U.S. Ambassador, she did it all.
After rising through the ranks of Vogue and Vanity Fair, she became an acclaimed Broadway playwright before shifting her focus to politics.
In 1942, she made history as the first woman to represent Connecticut in Congress, where she fought for atomic energy policy reform, better conditions for U.S. troops, and anti-communist initiatives.
Following personal tragedy, Luce left Congress but continued shaping American diplomacy, serving as U.S. Ambassador to Italy and later advising multiple presidents. She was the first woman to receive the U.S. Military Academy’s Sylvanus Thayer Award, a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, and a National Women’s Hall of Fame inductee.
Her legacy lives on through the Clare Boothe Luce Program, which funds scholarships for women pursuing STEM careers.
Today, we remember the incredible achievements of this Connecticut-born pioneer who reshaped history.

Dubbed the “rocket fuel of AI” by experts, this tiny company is shaping the future of tech. With projections of up to 23 Nvidias or 36 Amazons, the potential is unprecedented.
