🚢 TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY: TRAGEDY STRIKES THE TITANIC

April 14, 1912 – Connecticut passengers board the Titanic

In 1912, the RMS Titanic, hailed as the largest and most luxurious ocean liner ever built, struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank in the early morning hours. Over 1,500 people lost their lives in the tragedy that shook the world and became a defining moment of the 20th century.

Among those on board were 33 passengers headed for Connecticut—only 15 survived. First-Class travelers from the state, including a well-known architect and a stockbroker, all made it out alive. One, 28-year-old William Thompson Sloper of New Britain, faced lifelong accusations of cowardice after a reporter falsely claimed he disguised himself as a woman to board a lifeboat.

Of the five Second-Class Connecticut-bound passengers, three women survived, while two men perished. The greatest losses came from the Third-Class section, where 16 of 18 passengers died—immigrants from Ireland, Greece, Sweden, and Lebanon, many hoping to begin a new life in towns like Waterbury, Hartford, New Haven, and Stamford.

The disaster exposed major safety failures, including the ship’s lack of lifeboats—enough for barely 40% of those on board. Public outcry spurred reforms in maritime safety standards around the world. But for 18 would-be Connecticut residents, those changes came too late. Their stories, and their dreams, were lost at sea—today in Connecticut history.
